To our readership and all actors and other theatre people who
care. We are going to postpone our January Congess and I want you to know why. Following is the notice I sent out to our Company
membership.
-J. Michael Miller, December 14, 2010
Last night, I decided to postpone our Third National Congress. That
was a painful decision, but one I had to make. I have been working
toward this third session for five years now, and to have to delay
it further was difficult. But the facts are that the key panels in
this discussion of returning acting company’s to some of our larger
non-profit theatres were to be made up of a cross section of
artistic directors, board members, noted free lance directors and
playwrights, and those panels had failed to come together in the
way that I had imagined, with just a month left of holiday
distractions left before the Congress was to convene. There was the
clear possibility that we would be meeting with our selves in
January, instead of debating among our peers. Caucusing with
ourselves was what we did so poignantly in the first two
Congresses. Now it is time to move our agenda forward, and we
cannot do that until we get our colleagues, who tend to make our
decisions for us, in the room. For that reason, I will not convene
another Congress until those conditions are in place. I would like
to think late April, but we may have to take a more piece meal
approach before we can get “everyone together” in the same room on
a given date. Whatever it is that we have to do, we will give it a
try, and hopefully we will soon “have our voices heard.” In the
meantime, if you have given us a contribution toward this event, it
will be returned, along with our gratitude for your caring and
support.
Have a wonderful holiday, and may the coming year treat
you ever so kindly, Michael
